does your business rely on it

Whilst driving to work this morning I was listening to Chris Evans on the radio. He was interviewing a man who owns a slipper factory in Glastonbury. They make and sell over 50 styles of high-quality luxurious slippers. He had worked in the company all his life and described how the company has survived and flourished over many decades, through times of economic ups and downs.

Like many small artisan businesses in this country they have carved out a niche and rolled with the punches, changed and adapted to the changing social and economic landscape. The majority of their sales are now done online and this has opened up a global market to them.

Two minutes after the interview concluded Chris Evans announced that the slipper company’s website had crashed because of the interest that the interview had generated. How much money could this crash have potentially cost them?

The thought occurred to me that there are thousands of brilliant small businesses in the UK making and selling high-quality niche products or providing quality services. Most have had to adapt to survive and for many, there is now a heavy reliance on IT to make their businesses work efficiently and smoothly.

However, you can guarantee that for many of these businesses the thought of spending money on adequate IT equipment and quality IT support is horrifying, and they will struggle, using an old, outdated, slow kit and will lose countless hours in downtime and trying to solve issues themselves.

Investing in the right hardware and/or quality IT support is a smart move. The initial difficulty, however, when making the decision to invest is that it’s hard to see an in instant return on investment. You have to focus on how much blood, sweat and tears go into trying to maintain your own IT, and what that costs in terms of wasted time and ultimately what it costs in lost revenue.

Investing in your IT will pay you back over and over again. You will enjoy having no IT related stress and frustration and you will be free to concentrate on the things you are good at……….growing your business and increasing your profits.

How much better and more efficient could your business be?
